Before 1948 Jaffa was the largest Palestinian city and the country's front door — its port sent Shamouti oranges to Liverpool and Hamburg in wooden crates stamped with the name of Palestine, which is how much of Europe first learned the word. Walk from the clock tower Sultan Abdul Hamid built in 1906, down through the flea market, past al-Bahr mosque on the rocks, to the harbour where fishing boats still tie up. Manshiyya, the northern quarter, is gone entirely — a park sits on it. Ajami, the southern one, survives, and the families who stayed live there still.
From the Canaanite yafe — beautiful. One of the oldest working ports on earth; ships were loading here four thousand years ago.
Go on a Friday morning for the flea market. Abulafia bakery has been open since 1879.
