A walled sea city, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and one of the few places where an Ottoman town sits directly on top of a Crusader one, still standing. You walk the eighteenth-century streets, then descend a staircase into vast Crusader knights' halls, then a tunnel the Templars cut to the harbour. Above ground: al-Jazzar Mosque, the Khan al-Umdan with its clock tower, a covered market and a fishing port where the boats still go out. Ahmad Pasha al-Jazzar held these walls against Napoleon for two months in 1799 and Napoleon left without the city — the only place his eastern campaign stopped.
Akka appears in Egyptian execration texts around 1800 BCE, which makes it about four thousand years old as a name. The Crusaders called it Saint-Jean-d'Acre; Arabic never stopped calling it Akka.
Buy the combined ticket for the Crusader halls, the tunnel and the hammam. Eat hummus in the old city — Acre argues about which place is best.
